PIR HEG Neurofeedback is a technique that was devised by Dr. Jeffrey Carmen, A New York-based psychologist. PirHeg (Passive Infrared Hemoencephalography) Neurofeedback is a specific technique that helps users to consciously regulate cortical blood flow. Increasing blood flow to the prefrontal cortex (the front part of the brain) is thought to be optimal for increased concentration, relaxation and higher order thinking. Those with deficient blood flow to this region may suffer from emotional dysfunction and may have a difficult time with critical thinking or problem-solving.

HEG neurofeedback is considered completely safe – there are no notable adverse effects associated with this technique. PIR HEG neurofeedback involves wearing a headband-like device and is completely non-invasive. The feedback signal is attained from light frequencies. The concept behind pIR HEG is that when temperature increases in a certain region of the brain it is a result of metablolizing glucose for energy. Areas of the brain that are warmer temperature are likely metabolizing more glucose and are thus more active than other regions. This indicates a prefrontal cortex orientation or dominance, which has proven helpful with a number of conditions, including ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, Aspberger’s Syndrome, Post-Concussive Syndrome, addictions, depression, anxiety, stress, brain fog, fatigue, and sleep problems as well as stress, trauma and migraine headaches.

What is pIR Hemoencephalography (HEG) Neurofeedback?Hemoencephalography (HEG) is a measuring of neurons in the brain based upon blood flow. Unlike traditional neurofeedback (EEG Encephalography) which measures brain waves, HEG measures changes in blood flow and oxygen. PIR HEG neurofeedback allows you to monitor your brain activity and increase blood flow through this highly sensitive computer technology, with the help of infrared light for improved brain functioning.

How does blood flow relate to brain activity? When you focus on a task, the part of your brain engaged in that task needs more energy, which then uses more oxygen. This increased use of oxygen creates more oxygen-rich blood being carried to that part of the brain. There is a relationship between metabolic activity of the brain and blood flow. Increased blood flow can then be detected using infrared imagery, as seen by the pictures on the left.

How Does pIR HEG Neurofeedback work? A headband is placed on your forehead, and the passive infrared light shines through your forehead, reading brain activity and blood flow. Because it is a passive system it only reads the brain without putting anything into the brain. It is completely safe and can even be used during pregnancy. As you sit in front of a computer screen, you will watch a movie which you will be asked to focus upon. Then a bar graph will appear on the left side of the screen and will climb only as you are able to focus on relaxing and raising the bar graph. The session will last for about thirty minutes.

What is pIR HEG used for? Blood flow is increased at the prefrontal cortex with attentional brain focused activity. By focusing attention with a relaxed body and mind, the neurofeedback trainee can ultimately create, with the help of infrared light, frontal lobe dominance over limbic brain challenges. The prefrontal cortex is the home of reasoning, attentional focus, mood regulation, executive functioning and social awareness which are all enhanced with this process.
